An 18th century woman reported a tree at court. It really is surprising that Queen Charlotte would wait until 1800 to share a custom she liked. I do agree that there were trees around before Albert and Victoria. The girl who married Jane Austen's nephew records having presents from the tree around 1818. <br />Any one who has ever had lit candles on a live tree knows that they need much watching. <br />The story of Christmas tress always raises more questions than it answers.
