First, thanks so much to Catherine ...Hi, everyone!

First, thanks so much to Catherine Curzon for the privelege of having my piece featured on her elegant and energetic tour-de-force of the Long 18th Century!

Second, thank you to those who took the time to read and comment! He really was an amazing man and British national hero who is all-too-often overlooked in studies of the Napoleonic Wars in favor of Nelson and Wellington. I enjoyed getting to know him better, to be sure!

About the Jane Austen quote...no, I never did read it before, although I do know that the reports that came back to Britain were mixed. After all, he had been sent out there on bad terms with the current administration, and they were more than prepared to use him as a scapegoat should things go wrong. Nevertheless, in the end, the smear campaign just back-fired on those trying to launch, and Moore was exonerated as having done everything in his power to make the best out of a worsening situation in Spain.

Also, I will add that I think Jane's wry wit sometimes took a rather harsh turn, but this statement from her was completely quite out-of-turn. There were MANY who mourned him, not least his various friends and the soldiers who served under him and left testimony of it. Sometimes I think Ms. Austen had her head in the sand with regards to war, which is always brushed over lightly in her works.

Pearl of Tyburnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06454820098627801613noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-839525549786745818.post-39261001716020761242015-04-14T21:26:01.334+01:002015-04-14T21:26:01.334+01:00I had no idea of the Austen connection; I wonder i...I had no idea of the Austen connection; I wonder if Avellina is aware of it!Catherine Curzonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05763562687608837832noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-839525549786745818.post-36876896356900655482015-04-14T21:01:18.963+01:002015-04-14T21:01:18.963+01:00Enlightening and interesting. Jane Austen made an insensitive comment about his death in a letter-- something to the effect that perhaps his mother mourned him and it was well they didn't know any of the dead.It has made me wonder how his death was reported and whether he was blamed in the papers or dispatches for the loss.Regencyresearcherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10828749339318882968noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-839525549786745818.post-22877826569806285952015-04-14T18:34:23.364+01:002015-04-14T18:34:23.364+01:00Thanks, David; I'm really glad you enjoyed it!...Thanks, David; I'm really glad you enjoyed it!Catherine Curzonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05763562687608837832noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-839525549786745818.post-51782510216305665222015-04-14T18:34:04.477+01:002015-04-14T18:34:04.477+01:00Thank you for reading!Thank you for reading!Catherine Curzonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05763562687608837832noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-839525549786745818.post-56523531190288997262015-04-14T16:40:16.882+01:002015-04-14T16:40:16.882+01:00Excellent post.
